"…there are some things which, by their taste or by their color, when one has them on one’s tongue or in one’s eye, give joy, and others that give grief. Three things of joy, one of grief, that makes a living thing."

Jean Giono, Joy of Man’s Desiring

Life is a beautiful thing and full of surprises. Sometimes these surprises are joyous and sometimes they can leave a person, couple, or family feeling unprepared and overwhelmed. In my work as a relational therapist I meet a wide range of people who are doing their best to face these challenges, and yet they often feel as if they lack the ability or resources to successfully balance it all. Things that were meant to bring joy, such as partnership and parenting, instead bring sadness, confusion, and pain.  Relationships suffer.  People suffer. Individuals may feel isolated and alone, not sure if there is any hope.

Life is not a perfect story; rather, it is a human story, where LIFE is possible.

Wisdom is often found in struggle, and as a therapist I strive to infuse compassion and levity into the fabric of such experience, so that you are empowered to live the way you desire.

Work History:

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.  I specialize in individual, couples, and family therapy.  Additionally, I have training in grief and loss.

Prior to beginning my private practice, I worked in the area of vocational rehabilitation counseling, helping people with disabilities, primarily psychiatric issues such as ADHD, Depression, etc, work through emotional blocks to employment. This was rewarding work.  I also have a background in elementary education, which informs my understanding of the issues facing parents and children developmentally.

I’ve also served on the board for the Oregon Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (2005 to 2009) furthering education for the community regarding important issues facing families
.

Theoretical Orientation:

I consider therapy to be a sacred space for healing and growth, and I seek to honor each person as a unique individual with inherent value with their own feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and desires.  I believe people are relational by nature and motivated by a desire to find belonging in life, work, and love. When working with clients, I seek to understand the context in which a person finds themselves. This means that I seek to understand the intricate movement of individual, family, and environment as well as the multiple influences on people’s lives. I don't pretend to be an expert on another person, but I do serve as a mirror to reflect and expand on what I see, offering insight into inner longings and bringing a perspective that can cultivate wisdom and change. My role is as collaborative facilitator, and therapy is the process of encouraging clients to embrace their potential, find the courage to reconcile life’s challenges, and connect with others in meaningful ways.

Areas of Clinical Interest and Expertise:

My work as a relational therapist spans a diverse population of people, and over the years I've found a style that draws people who want to grow and find balance and authenticity in their lives. If I have a specialty it is couples counseling, although my approach to therapy, training, and experience extend to other areas as well. In general I utilize an experiential active approach to change that heightens emotion and helps to remove blocks that keep people stuck in their old patterns.  I've helped many couples around issues of intimacy, communication, infidelity, parenting, divorce adjustment, blended family issues, etc., and this work is especially fulfilling for me as I see people move through barriers to intimacy and connection. I’ve also received specialized training in the area of grief and loss and am a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist.

Some of my areas of experience include:

  • intimacy and sexual difficulties
  • depression and anxiety
  • ADHD in children and adults
  • grief and loss
  • divorce adjustment
  • parenting
  • women's issues
  • couples communication
  • trauma
  • phase of life issues
  • sandtray therapy with children and adults
  • family therapy
  • perfectionism and co-dependency
  • work place issues
  • shame and toxic faith

As well as providing individual, couple, and family therapy, I also offer several opportunities for group work including:

  • Filial Therapy Groups:  This is a parent-child relationship training model that teaches limit setting and nurturing based on child centered play therapy
  • Grief Recovery Groups:  These groups are 10 week groups designed to help people proves their grief related to losses in their life.  This is sometimes offered in a weekend seminar.
  • Co-dependency Groups:  These groups are meant to facilitate movement into healthy self love while learning to live with someone who has an addiction or mental illness.
